Key collaborations are important in the child’s therapeutic journey at Dynamics Speech. We strongly believe that parents and caregivers play a vital role in the success of the child’s therapy. They can provide support and reinforcement in learning when the child is at home. As such, we actively partner with the child’s parents and/or primary caregivers and support them through parent training, relevant resources and maintain regular and open communication throughout the child’s therapy.
We also ensure the child receives integrated care and support, if needed, through seamless and effective collaborations with Dynamics’ in-house multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals.
Assessment and Background:
Jayden is a 5-year-old boy who was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). He exhibited delayed oral motor skills, specifically difficulty with tongue movement and coordination for chewing food. Jayden was a fussy eater and had sensory aversions to soft and wet food textures. His parents were concerned as he had trouble sitting and often refused to eat during mealtimes.
Intervention:
To address Jayden’s challenges, our team of Speech-Language Pathologist and Occupational Therapist developed a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to his specific difficulties and family’s goals. We conducted exercises and sensory-based activities to enhance Jayden’s oral motor skills, focusing on improving tongue and lip movements. Additionally, we introduced a variety of textures and flavors to broaden his food options and improve his acceptance of new foods.
We worked closely with Jayden’s parents, providing them with weekly education and strategies to help Jayden sit with his family for mealtimes and encourage him to try new and healthy foods.
Positive Outcome:
Jayden made significant progress over the course of several weeks. He was able to chew and safely eat three new family foods at dinner and continues to accept new foods on his plate. Jayden now sits with his family for dinner every day!
