Key collaborations are important in the child’s therapeutic journey at Dynamics Speech. We strongly believe that parents and caregivers play a vital role in the success of the child’s therapy. They can provide support and reinforcement in learning when the child is at home. As such, we actively partner with the child’s parents and/or primary caregivers and support them through parent training, relevant resources and maintain regular and open communication throughout the child’s therapy.
We also ensure the child receives integrated care and support, if needed, through seamless and effective collaborations with Dynamics’ in-house multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals.
Assessment and Background:
Alex is a 4-year-old boy with developmental language disorder. He demonstrated difficulties with social interaction and verbal communication with people surrounding him. These difficulties have impacted his social activities to play and interact with his peers in school as well as to express his needs and thoughts to his parents and teachers.
Intervention:
To address Alex’s challenges, the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) developed a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to his specific difficulties and family’s goals. The SLP conducted child-centered and play approaches to enhance Alex’s communication intention and joint attention. Across the therapy sessions, the SLP transitioned to more adult-led approach to continue developing his social interaction and language skills (e.g., increasing 2-way interaction, making verbal requests, following and giving simple instructions).
The SLP worked closely with Alex’s parents, providing them with weekly education and strategies to support Alex generalizing his interaction and language skills across a variety of settings and communication partners.
Positive Outcome:
Jayden made significant progress over the course of several weeks. He was able to chew and safely eat three new family foods at dinner and continues to accept new foods on his plate. Jayden now sits with his family for dinner every day!
